David Loren Bass is a nationally recognized painter living in Santa Fe. He creates in oil paint as well as watercolor and occasionally in mixed media with monoprints. Born and raised near Conway, Arkansas, David received a B.S.E. in Art Education from the University of Central Arkansas. After attending summer study in painting at the Aspen School for Contemporary Art, David taught art on the secondary level in Nashville, Tennessee. He was employed by the U.S. Dept. of Defense to teach art at the Kenitra American High School in Kenitra, Morocco, a position he held for 6 years. David went on to receive an M.F.A. in painting at the University of North Carolina.
With his paintings, David conveys a lived experience, either directly on site, or recalled later through memory. When painting on site, he begins with a compositional drawing and then paints his subject to a point where it ceases to be just a replication for the subject, but becomes a paining of his experiences. His paintings feature strong structural compositions, high-keyed colors, energetic brushstrokes, a balance of lights and darks and fluid movements over the composition. David has had over 30 one-man shows and 70 groups shows, in addition to being the recipient of many prestigious artist-in-residences and grants. His work is in collection at museums in North Carolina, Florida and Texas.
