Kay McCarthy worked in clay for over 30 years. She never thought that she would be interested in working in any other medium until she had a wrist injury. Captivated by the beauty of the New Mexico landscapes and mountains, she found herself gazing out her studio windows and instead of sculpting she took the opportunity to begin to paint.
In 2003, Kay began to take classes in acrylic and oil painting but she didn’t respond well to these mediums. She then tried pastel painting and found the medium she loved. She has taken many workshops, including classes at the Fechin Art Institute, in Taos. One instructor emphasized Plein-Air painting. This was an eye-opening experience for her. She loves to begin her work outdoors, finishing her pieces in her studio.
