Peter Smith received his undergraduate and masters level education in New York. Later he earned his doctorate at Arizona State University. His most influential teacher was the color-field painter, Jules Olitski. This influence is shown in the love of the medium of paint, whether opaque, watercolor or oil. Smith is a landscape painter, although he also does figurative work. Smith has shown in numerous solo and group exhibits across the United States and his work is in many private and public collections, both in the United States and in Great Britain. His philosophy is as stated: "Visual Art is as silent as trees. Trees evoke a response in us, that response welling up from the depths of the psyche. The ambiguity of visual art is its strength. It invites the onlooker to be a creative participant in the aesthetic experience. The onlooker must bring all her/his experiences to the art object in order to try to understand its silent, expressive presence."
