Holger Schmidt was born and raised in Germany. He grew up in the sixties in a family of artisans who gave him early exposure to the visual arts. Later, Schmidt’s studies in geography and spirituality led him on various journeys around the world. Eventually he pursued a degree at the Nizhoni School for Global Consciousness in Galisteo,NM.and studied art at the Santa Fe Community College. Schmidt has always considered himself a painter, but in the last three years his work has expanded into the application of yarns and fabrics. His new artistic endeavor began with a recycling idea in conjunction with his passion for music. Schmidt began using CD cases as the canvas for his work. Recalling early childhood memories of being surrounded by the tactile feeling of the materials in his grandmother’s seamstress shop, his new work came together and the “yarn pieces” were born. His love for color and structural compositions transcended into limitless works with the use of yarns, fabrics, beads and recycled objects. Since the early nineties he has shown his colorful layered pieces in numerous venues in Germany and the United States. In Santa Fe he has exhibited his work in local galleries: the Box Gallery, Farrell Fischoff Gallery and Salon Margraff. The 2009 exhibition for emerging artists at the Gerald Peters Gallery debuted his new body of work.
